In the spring, summer, and autumn our hens range on our pastures where they enjoy foraging in the alfalfa, clover & grasses, catch bugs & the occasional mouse or frog. They spend most of their day outside and roost in their large mobile coops at night. We move these coop each week to fresh grass.
In the winter they are housed in an open-spaced barn with over 5x industry standard roaming space plus access to a large outdoor run. They typically enjoy time outside as part of their daily routine, unless it gets too windy or is snowing (not their favourite weather). They have a cozy insulated roost room inside the barn to sleep at night & lay eggs in our fancy roll-away style nest boxes that keep eggs clean.
We feed our hens a conventional layer ration, supplemented with market garden culls, produce from grocery store discards (through the LOOP Resource food waste reduction program), seeds & oyster shell.
